Auditions for our upcoming show Holding the Man are coming up on 27 and 28 May so we sat down with director Kathryn Thomas to get the lowdown on the show and what she’s looking for.

1. What is 'Holding the Man' about?
Holding the Man is about an extremely complex 15 year relationship between Tim and John, in which they go through the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. It is honestly one of the most tragic and uniquely beautiful stories I have ever read.

2. Why did you want to direct this show?
I was drawn to direct this show because as a member of the LGBTI community, I find stories like Tim and John's so incredibly important towards creating social change and understanding towards the community. It is also one of the most challenging shows, even just to watch, so I was drawn to the complexity.

3. What parts are you looking to cast?
I am looking for a full cast, which is Tim, John and 4 ensemble members who play multiple roles, like the boys friends and family.

4. What are you looking for in cast members?
With all the casts I have worked with, openness is key. I have a unique directing style, using a lot of psychological exercises and practical work, so being open and prepared for a challenge is essential.

5. Which part of the production process are you most excited about?
It's easy to the say the finished product, but what I'm most excited for is creating a relationship with the cast, forming that bond which often happens over a show, especially one of this nature. Also just seeing what actors do naturally is mesmerising, and maybe my favourite thing as a director.
